2001 Canadian Open (4), 2001
1.c4 g6 2.e4 Bg7 3.d4 d6 4.Nc3 Nf6 5.f3 0-0 6.Be3 Nc6 7.Nge2 a6 8.h4 h5 9.Qd2 Rb8 10.Rc1 A solid line, but hardly critical for the black pieces. Larry probably wanted to avoid a theoretical debate this day... 10...Bd7 11.g3 b5 12.cxb5 axb5 13.Bg2 e5 14.d5 Na5 15.b3 b4 16.Nd1 c6!? In some other games from this position (except that the h pawns are on their original squares) black has tried Bb5, and not without some success. Danny's move is very logical and he quickly gets lots of play 17.dxc6 Bxc6 18.0-0 d5 Danny has achieved a good position. This can be considered the first critical point of the game. [18...Qe7!? …Rfd8] 19.Nf2!? [19.Bc5?! dxe4 20.Qxd8 Rfxd8] 19...d4 I am not certain if I agree with this move. As things turn out, Black finds it difficult to do something with his passed d pawn. [19...dxe4!? 20.Qxd8 Rfxd8 21.fxe4 (21.Nxe4 Bxe4 22.fxe4 Ng4„) 21...Bb5 22.Rfe1 Nc6 …Nd5 unclear; 19...Bb5!?; 19...Ba8!? …Nc6] 20.Bg5 Qd6 21.f4!? Nd7 22.fxe5 Bxe5 [22...Nxe5!? 23.Nxd4 Nec4!? 24.bxc4 Qxd4 25.Qxd4 Bxd4 26.Rfd1 Bc3©] 23.Nd3!? Christiansen invites complications. In a sense, he must, especially since it will only take a couple of moves for Black to untangle his pieces on the queen side. 23...Bxg3 this turns out badly. Black doesn't have enough pieces in play to support the Black Queen's 'invasion' into whites flank [23...Bg7?! 24.Bf4 Ne5 25.Nxe5 Bxe5 26.Bxe5 Qxe5 27.Qxd4; 23...f6!? this has to be the best move: it is so logical 24.Nxe5 Nxe5÷] 24.Nxg3 Qxg3 25.Bf4 Qxh4 26.Bxb8 Rxb8 27.Nxb4 It appears as though Danny has overlooked this. His position is now complete ly disorganized 27...Ne5 28.Nd5! that knight over on a5 has been a spectator for too long 28...Bxd5 29.exd5 Re8!? Danny tries his best practical chance: a desperate king side attack [29...Nb7 30.Qf4 Ng4 31.Qxb8+; 29...Rf8 30.Qxa5 Ng4 31.Qc7] 30.Qxa5 Ng4 31.Qc7 f6 what else is there? 32.Qf4! d3 the alternative, quite reasonable, is resigning. Probably Danny was in time trouble here 33.d6 g5 34.d7 Rd8 35.Qd6 d2 36.Rc8 A difficult game to understand 1-0
