Istanbul Olympic Report

Early Sunday. November 5

by GM Kevin Spraggett

Today Canada will play against Kyrgistan. Ranked 40th, I think a pretty even match is likely.

Alex, Kevin, Igor and Pascal will play.

David is recovering from a cold. Jack is waiting in the wings ,anxious to get back into the fray. A lot depends on today's result: as the second half of the of who is playing well and who is off form.

Lunch today was a tossed salad followed by some type of chicken vegetable main course. Desert was some type regret the very small proportions that are served.

When I get up in the morning and look at myself in the mirror I have noticed that my stomach is getting a little smaller. And with no exercise!

The team has shown remarkable resilience in recent times. What we have been doing is, around midnight, buying a roast chicken, (about 6 dollars), bring it back to our rooms and have a party!

Last night, being Saturday, it seemed as though all of Istanbul was out on the streets until some 4 or 5 in the morning. Alex and I could only get some sleep after this hour.

Today the weather is sunny but cool. I have yet to see any rain, though the local news reports keep warning against it.

I found out last night that Istanbul was also hit by by am earthquake last year.

According to a hotel employee, just in Istanbul alone some 15,000 people were killed! Apparently most of them were military personnel, some type of tidal wave did them in.
