Istanbul Olympic Report

Late Monday. November 6

by GM Kevin Spraggett

No 'Monday blues' for Team Canada!

We scored a decisive 3-1 result against the Yugoslav team. Ranked some 20 positions ahead of us, they only barely escaped with their dignity.

Alex won a nice game on board one. In an isolated queen pawn position white overlooked his d-pawn and with it the game. Alex is really impressive this year! With the black pieces he is dangerous. (With the white pieces he is even MORE dangerous!) I wish him the best of luck in the world championships later this year...

I won a complex struggle against my GM opponent. A game with much manoeuvering, it featured an exchange sac on my part. Running short of time, my two knights proved to be very annoying to all of my opponent's pieces.

Pascal never seemed to recover from an inferior opening. His only loss of the Olympiad! Pascal has been a real asset to the team so far. I am certain he will bounce back next game!

The real gem of the round was Jack's stunning victory on board four. In a topical Sicilian defense, Jack went straight for the jugular and...did not miss! One of the best attacking games of the entire olympiad so far. Now Jack has two consecutive victories.

Tomorrow we play Portugal. We are looking at anything 3 or more.

Dale is doing an absolutely superb job with the team. He is professional. He has a great attitude. And the rest of the team has great respect for him.

Today we met Robert and Karen Hamilton. They have arrived in Istanbul to support the team and we appreciate it!! More tomorrow
