Istanbul Olympic Report

Late Wednesday. November 8

by GM Kevin Spraggett

Team Canada had a rocky match today against the Romanian team. Final result was 3-1 for the Romanians.

Things started off badly: Alex seemed to be in deep trouble from the opening and managed another minor 'miracle' to hold the draw.

On board four Jack quickly lost his way. He still hasn't recovered from his cold and probably should have not been allowed to play until he regained it.

Pascal held quite comfortably his game:he was on the verge of getting the better game when his opponent found some 'only' moves to keep things within acceptable limits.

Inspite of all of this, we could have still made a 2-2 result had I not blundered a piece on move 40 in an easily won ending! To tell you the truth, I had started a little combination some 4 moves before culminating in my blunder (Ne4)...

Tomorrow we are paired against a powerful Estonian lineup.

Inspite of our bad luck today, Team Canada is still in some very refined company. More tomorrow.
