Istanbul Olympic Report

Sunday. November 12

by GM Kevin Spraggett

Canada scored a dramatic win against Egypt in the 14th round of the Istanbul chess Olympics. 3-1 was the final result.

Alex, playing his 14th consecutive game, scored a well deserved win against his Egyptian counterpart. Featuring a tough Sicilian defense, Alex used subtle techniques to score the point. Bravo!!

I managed to win a dirty, complex and uncertain win against my opponent. I have to admit, in all honesty, that I was only trying to keep my head above water and had no idea of what was actually happening on he board.

Igor scored a magnificent victory! Using his favourite Alekhine's defense, Igor was better right from the beginning. A really nice way to finish his first Olympics!

On the fourth board, Jack scored an unfortunate loss. Missing a clear win, he made some bad moves because of his shortness of time. Result: 3-1 for Team Canada.

Egypt tried every trick in the book to 'spook' the Canadian players: they had their reserve players stand just outside of the ropes and make noise when it was our turn to move. Igor's opponent banged the clock with such enthusiasm that a number of players complained to the arbiters (but to no avail). I remember especially one player who had the habit of wheezing when it was his opponent's move!

One of the Egyptian players was seen after the game crying... What to say? 'All is fair in love and war'...the 'good guys' won!

For those unfamiliar with world class chess I can only say that it was tough and we Canadians made Canada proud.

First, every member of our team deserves respect! I can testify to every member's committment and dedication to our ultimate success.

No one cried (at least I saw no signs) But maybe ...sometimes late at night when all alone... I am proud of every member of our team: Alex (who played valiantly every game), Igor (who never gave up hope), Pascal (who is the perfect team member), Dave (our most solid and level headed member) and Jack (who showed tremendous spirit and motivation and inspired the rest of us to play with our hearts).

One of our best teams ever...we will be lucky to assemble such a talented team next time.

Canada started in 49th position...we ended tied for 26th! Two norms (Pascal and Igor).

A silver medal for one our boards.... A great experience. Wait until next time!!

Later this week I will give a more thorough analysis of our results. For now let me say that those who unjustly criticized the make up of the Canadian team refused to see the boldness and courage of a new conception of Canadian chess. 'We are not inferior to the very best teams'.

I believe that the future of our results as an Olympic team is very positive. We can hope to finish in the top ten sometime within the next 4-6 years! (Let me show you how!!)

I want to thank Sid Belzberg for believing in our chances and in encouraging us to push forward and explore new territory!

We look forward to 2002 when Sid can personally integrate in our delegation!

I also want to express my most sincere thanks to Dale for proving to me what I have always believed possible in every Canadian: loyalty, sacrifice, and brotherhood.
